Walter was the youngest of Walter Henry and Fanny Bannerís two children. Born in 1894 in Westbury, Wiltshire Walter lived with his parents and older brother in Orpington before moving to 65 Widmore Road. Walter attended Beckenham County School before assisting his father in his duties as a Relieving Officer and Registrar.

He enlisted in the London Regiment in February 1915 and served in France during the winter of 1915-16 when he was invalided home with frost bite. He was subsequently sent to Dublin where he was in the middle of the Sinn Fein rising but escaped without injury. He was sent back to France in March 1917 where he received a head wound, dying the next day.

Walterís brother Clarence also died.
